The remarkable ability of Red Sea corals to withstand extreme temperatures is attracting growing attention from the international media.
Recent features by Arab News and Gulf Times highlight research exploring how corals in the Red Sea cope with severe thermal stress, including the exceptional heat conditions recorded during the 2024 marine heatwave.
For the Marine Microbiomes Lab, understanding this resilience is closely connected to our work on coral–microbe interactions. By studying the coral holobiont and the complex microbial communities associated with it, our research aims to uncover the biological mechanisms that allow Red Sea corals to tolerate environmental conditions that can severely affect reefs elsewhere.
The extreme conditions experienced during the heatwave provided a rare opportunity to study these processes in a real-world setting, offering valuable insights into coral resilience in a warming ocean.
Understanding what makes these corals so resilient could ultimately help inform future approaches to coral conservation and restoration, while reinforcing the importance of protecting the unique ecosystems of the Red Sea.
