Can a previous encounter with a pathogen help a coral respond more effectively to a future infection?
A new article in The Microbiologist explores research from the Marine Microbiomes Lab investigating this intriguing question. The study found that corals exposed to a non-lethal dose of a pathogen showed improved responses when they were later challenged with the same pathogen — revealing what the authors describe as a “vaccine-like” response.
The research, carried out in Pocillopora favosa, also explored changes in the coral-associated microbiome and gene expression following pathogen exposure. Together, the results provide new insights into how previous microbial encounters can influence coral health and defence.
Understanding these interactions could open new avenues for studying immune training and microbiome conditioning in corals, while contributing to our broader understanding of coral resilience to disease.
