Struggling to remember why you picked a career in science?
In Nature Careers’ “Best. Day. Ever.” series, scientists share the moments that remind them why they chose a career in research.

In this specific article, Prof Raquel Peixoto, explained that that moment came shortly after arriving in Saudi Arabia. Seeking the ideal location to test coral probiotics in the field, Raquel spent months exploring reefs across the Red Sea in search of a site that matched a very specific vision: shallow, diverse, protected, and naturally divided into reef patches that could serve as experimental replicates.

Then, during a dive with members of the team, they found it. The perfect Place that would later become the Coral Probiotics Village, an underwater experimental reefscape where our research team has spent the past five years testing innovative microbial solutions to improve coral health and resilience.
