Raquel Peixoto participates at Botanical Garden Biodiversity Forum
04 February, 2025
Professor Raquel Peixoto attended the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Biodiversity Forum, and presented her groundbreaking research on leveraging microbiology (BMCs) to protect coral reefs. A key demonstration of this research is the Coral Probiotics Village (CPV), - the first underwater laboratory dedicated to conducting and scaling up probiotic application in a controlled, natural environment.
Beyond the technical solutions, Professor Peixoto used the forum to stress the broader connection between marine conservation and global health through the "One Health" concept.
Beyond the technical solutions, Professor Peixoto used the forum to stress the broader connection between marine conservation and global health through the "One Health" concept. She articulated that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the intrinsic link between human health and the health of the planet, stating, "We need to broaden our awareness and vision of One Health, recognizing that the health of coral reefs, for example, directly impacts the health of coastal communities and global health". Her participation underscored the global relevance of KAUST's research and illustrated how harnessing the microscopic world offers powerful, nature-based, macroscopic solutions to one of Earth's most pressing environmental challenges.
