The Islamic Arts Biennale recently offered a unique opportunity for the public to delve into the mysteries of the Red Sea through its "Uncovering the Red Sea: Ask the Scientist" program. Led by leading researchers from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), this interactive session provided a glimpse into the world of coral reefs and the groundbreaking science done at KAUST dedicated to their preservation.
Held as part of the Biennale's public program, the event featured a distinguished panel of KAUST scientists: Dr. Francesca Benzoni, Professor Raquel Peixoto, Professor David Suggett, (KCRI); and Professor Michael Berumen.
A key focus of the discussion was the innovative and cutting-edge coral restoration techniques being developed and implemented by KAUST researchers, including the Marine Microbiomes Lab. These, specifically, were also presented to the audience by members of the Marine Microbiomes Lab: Gustavo Duarte, Barbara Ribeiro, Helena Villela, and Erica Santoro at a separate Biennale event. The scientists detailed how their work is addressing the threats posed by climate change, pollution, and unsustainable practices, and empowered attendees with knowledge on how they too can contribute to reef conservation efforts.
As an education partner for the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025, KAUST's participation in this program underscores its commitment to public engagement and its role in fostering collective action for the protection of the Red Sea's vital ecosystems.
