AMI prizewinner Raquel Peixoto reveals how coral symbionts are key to tolerating rising temperatures on World Coral Reef Day

01 June, 2025

Professor Peixoto's groundbreaking study at KAUST, highlighted in a recent article in The Microbiologist,  has revealed that not all corals respond to heat stress in the same way, and this difference is directly linked to the specific types of microorganisms that reside inside them. This research, conducted at KAUST, demonstrates that the unique composition of a coral's microbiome dictates its ability to tolerate and survive elevated temperatures.

As an AMI prizewinner, Professor Peixoto's research underscores KAUST's commitment to cutting-edge scientific inquiry that addresses some of the planet's most pressing environmental challenges.
