12 January, 2025

The 8th edition of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Biodiversity Forum, recently held, brought to the forefront a topic of extreme relevance for marine conservation and global health: "The role of microbiology in coral reef health and 'One Health'." The event featured the participation of KAUST researcher Raquel Peixoto, who presented innovative studies on the use of microorganisms to strengthen the resilience of corals and the marine environment.

Prof Peixoto, shared with the audience the strategies the Marine Microbiomes Lab team is developing to create innovative solutions based on microorganisms, aiming to protect coral reefs. In addition to presenting this research, Raquel emphasized the importance of the "One Health" concept, which recognizes the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health.

"The pandemic showed us that human health is intrinsically linked to the health of the planet," Peixoto stated. "We need to broaden our awareness and vision of One Health, recognizing that the health of coral reefs, for example, directly impacts the health of coastal communities and global health."
